I love being out in nature. It soothes me, and helps me to feel grounded. It is also very important to my identity as a Pagan. I have chosen to work with the Sierra Club as they offer volunteering opportunities to help combat climate change, as well as outdoor engagement activities for members such as hikes.
My Pathway
My current pathway plan is political engagement. I think this best suits my current life style and goals as I am currently committed to finishing my first bachelor’s degree with ASU through the Starbucks partnership, so my career and academic plan for the foreseeable future are pretty locked in. That leaves my civic engagement as a volunteer pursuit. This will allow me to be more engaged with my local community and expand my social network with those who have similar passions to my own. My husband has also been interested in finding a local volunteer opportunity, so I may be able to convince him to volunteer together.
I have chosen to stick with the Sierra Club for now. Its mission as an environmental advocacy group fits with my identity as a Pagan, as well as my passion for an Earth conscious lifestyle. I appreciate that they focus so many of their programs on climate change legislation. I also like that they offer engagement with the group itself through membership outings and activities such as hikes when we’re not in the middle of a pandemic. Inclusive and intersectional advocacy are also things that are super important to me. Sierra Club has made commitments to both.
I don’t have a specific program picked yet to support, but I have signed up for their next Zoom meeting for their student activist group and am still waiting to hear back from the local volunteer coordinator. I am hoping to get more information on their current projects to see if something suits my goals.
